Correct set-up of the instrument at the initial stage of learning largely determines the musician's future development. That's why the first steps deserve particular care.
Selecting students
The recommended age to start lessons is 12–14, depending on physical development. In selection, a good ear, musical memory and a sense of rhythm are important.
The teacher's role
The teacher monitors the technical condition of the instrument and develops both the student's performing technique and their musical thinking. Particular attention is paid to setting up the breathing, embouchure, body, hands, fingers and head.
Independent practice
From the very first stages, the teacher should help the student organise both class and home practice — it is this that becomes the most important element of productive work.
